SHRUB BAMBOO

These bamboo will reach six to eight feet tall. All will grow with a mounding mass of leaves and very little culm showing. There are several different leaf colors and sizes available. Use as fillers, in pots and mass planting.

Arundinaria gigantea tecta - SWITCH CANE
Seedlings grown from a form of the native North American bamboo known a CANE BRAKE. These may get larger than noted. Use for native plantings in the Southeast to Indiana and Ohio.

Chimonobambusa marmorea - MARBLED BAMBOO, DWARF BLACK BAMBOO, KANCHIKU
The new shoots have purple blotches. Older culms turn dark mahogany. Culm sheaths are mottled beige-mahogany.

Chimonobambusa marmorea variegata
The leaves are sparingly striped in white. With proper sun exposure and pruning, the culms turn lobster red.

A large-leaved bamboo with foot long foliage.

Indocalamus tessellatus - LARGE LEAVED BAMBOO, TESSELLATED BAMBOO
Usually stays under 4 feet tall. Has the longest leaves of any bamboo (24" X 4"). Looks best in shade or under trees. Excellent choice for pots.

A beautiful colored bamboo with yellow culms green groove all shaded with pink. Long dark green leaves with an occasional stripe.

75% of the leaves are white striped. Some are pure white. Leaf is similar to Pleio. variegatus.

Sasa kurielensis simofuri -
A variety of a shrub bamboo that is widely distributed in Japan. This one has fine white variegation on its leaves.

Sasa palmata - PALM LEAVED BAMBOO
The attractive large leaves (up to 15" X 2 1/2") have an erect form. A hardy plant with a tropical appearance. Performs best in the shade but nice looking specimens have been seen growing in full sun.

Sasa tsuboiana -
A fast grower to shrub size. Broad green leaves like S. veitchii. The leaves stay green all year. Nice looking.

Like Shibatea chinensis in appearance but grows much taller. Intolerant of alkaline soil.

Botanical name - Common name: English, Thai, Japanese, or Chinese, etc. A short descriptive paragraph about each species or variety. The six numbers and letter codes below the description are, from left to right:

    1)The sunlight tolerance for best performance - full sun, 1/2 day sun or shade.

    2)Full bamboo height in feet.

    3)Full diameter in inches.

    4)Temperature in degrees Fahrenheit where leaf kill may begin. Rhizomes may tolerate 10-15 degrees colder.

    5)Recommended USDA Zones.

    6)Running bamboo are designated with an R and clumping type spreaders with a C.
