As a teenager in Japan, I practiced Japanese archery with our landlord. The bow was made from Madake and the arrows from this bamboo. The upright culms and large drooping leaves make a tropical looking form. Good under trees, in pots and seacoast areas. If grown under the most healthful plant conditions it will become a large timber type bamboo with zig-zag culms at the base.
